Cannot download pdf files attachments from gmail

I can't download or read Gmail attachments too, I have tried clearing cache, clearing app data, and even reinstalling from play store.. but I still can't get the Gmail app to behave.. the only way I have now is to use Gmail from chrome browser -- which is a slow archaic way!!  · I can't download any attachment on my gmail (both on chrome and safari). Nothing happens when I click the download icon. Another strange behaviour is that the contacts faces/icons on the left (gtalk panel) had disappeared too (a broken link icon appears). If I use the GMAIL app, I can open any PDF document. However, I do not use the GMAIL app for my work which utilizes Exchange. Yes, I have more than sufficient free space, as I said I managed to download an attachment on the same device using the web version of gmail through browser, but I can't download (no notification or anything, opening the downloads app I can see the file "queued" but can't open it, it never downloads really) or view (stuck in fetching attachment 0%) any attachment in the official Gmail android app.
